This exercise is not really like any of the other exercises or assignments I’ll give you. Rather than asking a question, I’ll lead you through a guided meditation - a visualization exercise. This will help you clarify your goals, and also help you share them with others - starting with me.
ImagineYourMasterwork.mp3
Imagine and describe a vivid picture of your masterwork.
- What is it about? What kinds of arguments or claims does it make? What kinds of questions does it ask?
- What medium is it? Is it a book? A blog? A documentary? An online community? Something completely different or new?
- What is the design of the work? What color is it?
- Who are your readers? Why do they read this work?
- When you finish writing the work, what questions do you still have? What questions are now possible to explore, that you couldn’t explore beforehand?
After imagining this vividly in your mind (mental image), and describing it to yourself (mental talk), record your experience as a journal entry. After completing a description of your work, answer the following questions:
- What did you take away from the exercise? Did you have any interesting ideas emerge from it?
- How did this exercise make you feel emotionally, in your body? Excited? Nervous? Afraid? Calm? Nothing? Where did you feel those feelings?
